Perhaps unusually for a novelist in the 1940s, his scenes of sex and violence are quite graphic and he depicts the realities of life and death in all their sordid and gory detail. What I found surprising in the story is that Nefertiti plays a much lesser role than history implies. The main protagonist and narrator is Sinuhe, priest-physician to the Pharaohs Amenhotep III and Akhenaten (called Akhnaton in the story), whose consort, Nefertiti, is the subject of the above quotation. 1 Ratings 17 Want to read 0 Currently reading 4 Have read Overview View 8 Editions Details Reviews Lists Related Books Publish Date 1949 Publisher G.The Egyptian is a classic historical novel by Finnish writer Waltari and set in the Egypt of the 14th century BCE. The main basis of the plot, which was supposed to lead up to the fall of Atlantis, instead became the basis for the fall of Númenor, an important part of the history behind The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien’s attempt at time travel was never finished, but there are echoes of the story in his other writings. Who would write which story was determined by a coin toss. However, they were already encouraging each others’ writing, and eventually issued each other a challenge: one of them would write a story about space-travel, and the other would write a story about time-travel. Tolkien had not yet published what would become their most famous works. Lewis‘ Space Trilogy ( Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength) began with the latter. Sometimes stories begin with a challenge and a coin toss. Sometimes stories begin with a single image of a faun and a lamppost ( The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe). That said, there isn’t the overarching doom narrative of a lot of nature conservation messaging, more a sense of awe regarding how little we know and have the potential to uncover. I read it with the sense that Sheldrake was using his extensive knowledge and research into fungi to campaign for a better appreciation before it is too late. It’s the kind of book fungi have been waiting for to tell their stories, as the meme below so totes hilariously illustrates: ![]() You get the impression that Sheldrake could write books for the rest of his days focusing on one of the themes chaptered each time, such is the depth of each subject. Recently I have had a bit more of that required mental space, after a year of being swamped. This includes people new to the study of fungi and those who are more experienced. The reviews have also been almost universally positive, from a broad cross section of readers. Alas, I couldn’t find the mental space to take it all in. I knew it was going to be an excellent book that contains huge amounts of fascinating info about the fungal kingdom because I’d read the first 50 pages. It almost certainly has fungal spores on it, probably mould. ![]() Merlin Sheldrake’s Entangled Life has been sitting on my bookshelf for well over a year. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Margaret Mahy Medal Award was established by the New Zealand Children's Book Foundation in 1991 to provide recognition of excellence in children's literature, publishing and literacy in New Zealand.
